BLOGGING THE VIEW: 7 tips to avoid dry skin this winter

Beat the winter dryness with these easy-to-follow tips...

Cooler days are approaching which means less humidity and an increase in skin dryness.

If left untreated, this dryness can lead to uncomfortable and avoidable skin conditions. Don’t suffer through winter by avoiding skin dryness with these simple tips.

1. Check the fabrics

If you’re prone to skin irritation, you might want to avoid synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester and rayon that aren’t breathable and can cause more dryness. Certain types of wool, such as merino wool, can also lead to irritation, so check the label before buying. Rather go for looser, natural fabrics where you can.

2. Keep indoor heating to a minimum

Fortunately, Zululand doesn’t necessarily get cold enough for indoor heating, but if you do need to turn on a heater, don’t do it for too long. The heaters drastically reduce the amount of moisture from the air, causing the skin to dry and crack. Humidifiers are also a good way to replace any lost indoor moisture.

3. Don’t forget the sunscreen

Just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean you need to forget about the sunscreen. UV radiation will cause long-term damage to the skin barrier and can lead to other skin-related irritations, so make sure to lather up before heading out. Try to go for sunscreen products that use natural ingredients, as these are less likely to irritate the skin.

4. Check your skincare routine

If you’re constantly having to deal with dry skin during winter, you might want to reconsider your skincare products and routine. If you’re using chemical-laden skincare products, you might be stripping your skin of natural oils. Skin sensitivities mean you’ll need to avoid fragrances and alcohol. As mentioned, natural ingredients are key, and you might want to consider serums to address any skin dryness.

5. Don’t forget your hands

We’re constantly washing our hands, and with the excess sanitising because of Covid-19, our hands are going to be even dryer in the winter months. Hands are also generally always exposed and dealing with friction, so it’s important we take extra care of them. Check for hand moisturisers that include things like:

· Cocoa seed butter
· Jojoba seeds
· Argan oil
· Borage seed
· Almond oil
· Vitamin E

6. Avoid hot baths

When the winter chill hits, we’re prone to increasing the bath and shower temperature to warm up. Unfortunately, this will strip the skin of its protective natural oils that we need to lock in moisturiser. Try keep baths and showers short and at a lukewarm temperature if possible. Once you have washed, make sure to moisturise your skin straight afterwards.

7. Keep hydrated

Something to never forget is that your body needs to keep moisturised inside as well as out. Keep drinking water throughout the day, even when it’s not hot. In addition to keeping hydrated, consider eating foods that are high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids for that healthy skin glow.
