In light of the bitterly cold temperatures forecast for most of South Africa over the next few days, we can safely say winter is upon us.
But while most of the country stokes their fires and digs out their winter woollies, those of us in Zululand look forward to a few months of no humidity and mostly mild temperatures.
So if you are reading this from a soon-to-be winter wonderland and are planning a getaway holiday, here are five reasons to consider the Zululand region.
1. Warm ocean
We know those from up-country always need a dip in the ocean regardless of the time of year. So, with winter ocean temperatures averaging 21°C even in the dead of winter, a swim in the sea off the coast of Zululand is always a drawcard.
2. Sunny days
With highs of 26°C in July, the sun is always shining in Zululand. And a lack of humidity in the winter months makes soaking up some vitamin D very enjoyable indeed.
3. Big 5 game reserve
Zululand is, without doubt, Big 5 country. With Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and iSimangaliso Wetland Park both on our doorstep, what better reason do you need to visit the region? One day you can be on the game viewer watching a lion stalking an impala, and the next you can be learning how to dive in Sodwana Bay. The possibilities are endless!
4. Dlinza forest aerial boardwalk
If forest walking is more your style, the Dlinza forest aerial boardwalk in eShowe is a must-do. This 150m-long walkway built 10m above the forest floor offers magnificent flora and fauna viewing at treetop level. There is also a 20m tower offering dramatic views of the forest canopy and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. There are also many ground-level walking trails, as well as the Royal Drive for those who prefer sightseeing on wheels.
5. Whale watching
In Zululand, winter is synonymous with the humpback whale migration. Between May and December, these gentle giants migrate up the east coast of South Africa to calve in the warm Mozambican waters, returning to Antarctic waters once the calves are old enough to make the trip. Enquiries for boat-based whale watching tours can be made through the iSimangaliso website.
With these options at your disposal, there is a silver lining to the doom and gloom of winter.
