IT’S the start of a wonderful new year which means it’s time to get those calendars lined up for all the exciting events coming up. To get you started, here’s a look at some key dates to diarise this year.

16 to 29 January: Australian Open
After an epic Football World Cup to end of 2022, many of us are ready for the next major sporting event which, in 2023, will be the Australian Open in Melbourne. This will be the first tennis Major since the departure of tennis legends Roger Federer and Serena Williams.

27 January: Disney 100 Years of Wonder celebrations
In 1923, Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio founded The Walt Disney Company which has grown in a century to include Disneyland theme parks and a host of films and shows. This year, we’ll get to celebrate 100 years of this impactful company.

12 March: The 95th Academy Awards
The now controversial Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate the best films released in 2022. If you’re not going to watch the entire show, then you can at least look forward to the highlights.

6 May: Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort
You’ve watched the Meghan and Harry documentary, binge-watched The Crown, and now you’re getting the chance to watch history unfold live when King Charles III and his beloved (second) wife take to the throne. Taking place at Westminster Abbey in London, Charles will have the St Edward’s Crown placed on his head by the Archbishop of Canterbury, as well as being presented with the Royal Orb the Sceptre, and the Sovereign’s Sceptre.

28 May to 11 June: French Open
The second Major will take place at Roland Garros where Rafa Nadal, the King of Clay, will attempt to retain his title at the age of 37.

3 to 16 July: Wimbledon
This will be followed by the third Major the following month at London’s All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Djokovic has won the last two and is keen to get his third, equalling Federer’s title for most men’s single’s Wimbledon titles.

20 July to 20 August: 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
Hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand, this major event will see 32 teams from all six football confederations competing for the top title.

28 August to 10 September: US Open
The fourth and final tennis Major will take place at Flushing Meadows with eyes, once again, on Djokovic after the three-time winner was forced to withdraw having been unvaccinated against Covid-19.

8 September to 28 October: The Rugby World Cup
Yip, it’s been four years since we last took the title as the Champions of the World and we’ll be hot contenders heading to France for the shot at the William Webb Ellis trophy.

23 September to 8 October: 2022 Asian Games
The Covid-19 crisis in China caused these games, originally planned for May 2022, to be postponed. The 19th edition will now take place in 2023.

October to 26 November: ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
It’s definitely a year for World Cups as South African anxiety skyrockets ahead of the next cricket world cup. The 13th edition will be hosted in India played in a 50-over format.
