BLOGGING THE VIEW: Voting day tips to remember
Here's everything to prepare you as you wait to make your mark

That’s right, this coming Wednesday (29 May) is election day so you had better get prepared! If this is your first time voting, or you simply can’t remember how it’s done because it’s been so long, here are a few tips to make voting day go smoothly for you.
1. The polling stations are expected to be open from 7am to 9pm and it’s often best to get your voting done early so you can sit back and enjoy the rest of the day.
Generally, mid-morning and mid-afternoon are good times to go as the queues tend to be shorter. If you’re not getting time off work, rather don’t leave it to the last minute if you can. However, for those who have no option, 9pm is the final cut-off.
2. Check that you know exactly where your designated voting station is beforehand, using the IEC’s voting station finder – https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/ – by contacting the IEC Helpline on 0800 11 800 or the IEC WhatsApp on 0600 88 000.
3. You can’t vote if you’re not a South African citizen, which you have to prove on the day. Take your green barcoded ID book, your smart ID card, or a temporary identification certificate if you’ve lost your ID document.
4. Check the weather forecast and make sure you’re prepared for any eventuality – sunscreen, umbrella, cool or warm clothing.
5. Depending on when and where you vote, there might be a queue, so be prepared to wait. Take along some water and a snack, as well as something to read or listen to while you wait. Don’t get frustrated – it’s going to do nobody any good.
6. Follow the IEC on Facebook (IECSouthAfrica), Instagram (iecsouthafrica), or Twitter/X (IECSouthAfrica) to keep updated on any news or last-minute changes.
How the voting process works:
Step 1: The IEC official will check you are a registered voter with your ID before marking you off the voters’ roll.
Step 2: Collect your 3 ballot papers for the national, provincial and local election, and mark your ballot papers in the private voting booth.
Step 3: Make a clear X next to your chosen party or candidate.
Step 4: Place your completed ballot papers in the designated ballot boxes.
Step 5: Promptly leave the voting station to allow others to vote.
