BLOGGING THE VIEW: 7 overlooked spring cleaning spots to focus on
Warmer weather is here, which means it's time to start spring cleaning! While decluttering is great, consider some of the more hidden spots requiring attention

SPRING is just around the corner, bringing with it warmer weather, blooming gardens, and the perfect excuse to do a deep clean. But while most of us scrub our floors, polish windows, and clear out cupboards, there are many areas around the home that often go unnoticed.
Here are some of the most commonly overlooked areas to include in your spring-cleaning checklist.
1. Air-conditioner filters
As the temperature rises, air conditioners in Zululand start working overtime. The air inside your home can be up to three times more polluted than outside, which is why regularly cleaning your AC filter is essential. A clogged filter not only pushes allergens and bacteria back into your living space, but also forces the unit to work harder, driving up electricity costs. If you suffer from hay fever or seasonal allergies, this step is non-negotiable.

2. Fridge coils
When last did you pull your fridge away from the wall? The coils at the back – or underneath – collect dust, hair, and dirt, especially if you have pets. Over time, this build-up forces the fridge to use more energy and can even become a fire hazard. Vacuuming these coils every six months will extend your fridge’s lifespan, reduce energy bills, and keep your appliance working well.
3. Range hood filters
Cooking is part of our daily lives, but few people remember to clean their range hood filters – the ventilation system that traps grease and grime. If left unchecked, these can become a fire risk. Depending on your cooking habits, clean them every one to three months. Most filters can simply be soaked in soapy water or placed in the dishwasher, but if yours is charcoal-based, it may need replacing.
4. Dishwashers
Ironically, the machine that cleans your dishes also needs a thorough cleaning! Food particles and grease build up in the dishwasher’s filter, racks, and spray arms, reducing efficiency and creating unpleasant odours. A simple combination of vinegar and baking soda can tackle bacteria and smells while extending the lifespan of your appliance.
5. Drains
Blocked drains are one of those issues that always seem to appear at the worst possible time. You can prevent costly plumber callouts by flushing out your drain with baking soda and vinegar every few months. For best results, cover the drain after pouring the mixture to let the fizzing reaction push through the built-up gunk.
6. Blinds and shutters
While curtains often get a wash, blinds and shutters tend to collect dust silently in the background. Whether you’ve got aluminium blinds, wooden shutters, or security screens, a regular wipe-down prevents dust and dirt from circulating through the house.
7. Your digital and car clutter
Spring cleaning isn’t just about the home. Tackle that overflowing email inbox, clear out photos from your phone, or finally sort through the clutter in your car or garage. Freeing up these spaces brings the same sense of relief as tidying a room, and often makes daily life more efficient.
Spring cleaning is about more than just physical cleaning; it’s about creating a healthier, more efficient living space. By paying attention to these overlooked areas, you’re improving your physical experience as well as promoting mental health!
