‘ISHIBOBOS’ and ‘Ladumas’ were the order of the day’s play at the inaugural RBCT Grantleigh Super 8 soccer tournament held at Grantleigh School on Saturday.
Eight top Zululand primary and high schools competed for the two prestigious soccer crowns, resulting in some sensational football being played.
But it was Grantham Park Primary School (GPPS) who dominated the primary school section and won the title, with a strong and talented Empangeni High School (EHS) side bagging yet another trophy for their overflowing cabinet.
The younger section final saw GPPS taking on rivals Zululand Remedial Centre (ZRC) in an action-packed end-to-end game which ended in a deadlock at 1-1, thanks to goals from Siyanda Mtshali (Grantham) and Kyle le Roux (ZRC).
The two sides went into a nail-biting penalty shoot-out which kept the crowds and spectators on the edge of their seats.
But it was GPPS who came out triumphant with a 4-3 win to claim the 2013 title and bragging rights.
In the senior finals, EHS took on eShowe, which certainly lived up to all the hype.
Goals from Boyzi Ndwandwe (EHS) and Siyanda Mnqayi (eShowe) tied the teams at one apiece heading into the final stretch.
But it was Thabani Mthembu who banged in a ripper of a goal to seal the deal for the EHS side and claim yet another tournament victory.
‘It’s great to have RBCT behind the sponsorship of the inaugural RBCT Grantleigh Super 8 Tournament, which saw eight primary schools and eight high schools take to the field. RBCT have been very generous in sponsoring the event and we hope this will be the first of many tournaments to come,’ said Grantleigh sport marketing person Chris Smit.
The competing schools were: Primary Schools – Grantleigh Preparatory, KwaMbonambi Primary, Grantham Park Primary, Zululand Remedial Centre, Felixton College, Mtubatuba Primary, Richardia Primary and Hluhluwe Primary which did not arrive; high schools – Grantleigh College, Empangeni High, eShowe High, John Ross College, Felixton College, Richards Bay High, Richards Bay Christian School and Gcwalulwazi High.
