GPPS and EHS are soccer kings

Scintillating school soccer action

GRANTHAM Park Primary School (GPPS) and Empangeni High School (EHS) were crowned soccer kings after winning the primary and high school categories at the inaugural RBCT Grantleigh Super 8 Tournament which was held at Grantleigh School on Saturday.

Eight of Zululand’s top primary and high schools came out to compete for the two prestigious titles, resulting in some phenomenal football being played.

GPPS took on a talented Zululand Remedial Centre (ZRC) side, which produced end-to-end action testing the goal keepers abilities. The game ended in a 1-1 deadlock, thanks to goals from Siyanda Mtshali (GPPS) and Kyle le Roux (ZRC).

The two sides headed into a penalty shoot out which kept the crowds and spectators thoroughly entertained.

But it was GPPS who remained cool under pressure and claimed a 4-3 win to clench the 2013 title.

The senior final between EHS and eShowe High School was a cracker.

Brilliant goals from Boyzi Ndwandwe (EHS) and Siyanda Mnqayi (EHS) tied the game up at one a piece heading into the final stretch of the match.

But it was Thabani Mthembu of EHS who banged in a ripper of a goal to seal the deal and claim yet another tournament victory and trophy for his team’s overflowing trophy cabinet.

‘It’s great to have RBCT behind the sponsorship of this tournament, which saw eight primary schools and eight high schools take to the field. RBCT have been very generous and we hope this will be the first of many tournaments to come,’ said Grantleigh Sport Marketing person Chris Smit.

The competing schools were:

Primary schools: Grantleigh Preparatory, KwaMbonambi Primary, Grantham Park Primary, Zululand Remedial Centre, Felixton College, Mtubatuba Primary, Richardia Primary and Hluhluwe Primary who failed to attend.

High schools: Grantleigh College, Empangeni High, eShowe High, John Ross College, Felixton College, Richards Bay High, Richards Bay Christian School and Gcwalulwazi High.
