Zululand rugger boys to represent SA

Two Zululand rugby players have been included in the SA Schools squad of 28 players for the U19 international series against Wales, France and Italy this month

TWO Zululand rugby players have been included in the SA Schools squad of 28 players for the U19 international series against Wales, France and Italy this month.

The teams were selected at the recent Craven Week tournament.

Phendulani Buthelezi, the current Headboy and rugby captain at DHS, hails from Hluhluwe.

He No 8 was selected as the KZN Craven Week captain this year.

In March Buthelezi was also one of two KZN players to represent the province at the SARU schools U18 Sevens squad that played in Windhoek, Namibia.

Mtubatuba’s Celimpilo Gumede (Grade 11) plays lock for the DHS 1st XV side and last year attended the SARU U16 assessment camp in Paarl.

Both boys will don the national colours at the international tournament in Cape Town.

The SA team will play Wales next Friday, France on Tuesday, 15 August 15 and England on Saturday, 19 August).

‘I am extremely proud of these young men,’ said head of rugby at DHS, Scott Mathie.

‘They really have been role models to all the young boys, not just in the way they play, but more importantly in their behaviour off the field.

‘Their humility is an example to all and it will continue to keep them attaining the standards of excellence they have set.’
