SA Comrades make it a double
Among the Zululanders, NRB Harriers' Dumisani Dlamani was the first in Pietermaritzburg after completing the race in 6:07:49
ALTHOUGH many spectators were possibly disappointed that Bongumusa Mthembu did not win the 2019 Comrades Marathon on Sunday, those present at the finish at the Scottsville Race Course were satisfied that another South African did win.
Edward Mothibi (Nedbank Running Club Gauteng) took the race in 5hr:31:33.
Mthembu had not given up after losing the lead on Polly Shorts and was trailing by a mere 25 seconds as he crossed the finish line.
The crowd then exploded when Gerda Steyn made it a double for South Africa.
Adding to the excitement was the fact that she broke the up-run record and became the first woman to finish under six hours.
Among the Zululanders, NRB Harriers’ Dumisani Dlamani was the first in Pietermaritzburg after completing the race in 6:07:49.
The Zululand club with the highest number of entries was NRB Harriers with 75 runners on the start line and 62 finishers.
