WATCH: Missing Comrades Marathon runner airlifted to hospital

Woman went missing after crossing the Comrades Marathon finish line shortly before 5pm

A large-scale search was initiated after the Comrades Marathon last night (Sunday) when a woman, after crossing the finish line shortly before 5pm, disappeared.

Family members of the runner wearing a Fish Hoek, Cape Town club vest took to social media to alert the public as to her disappearance.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, workers found the unconscious woman at about 7am today (Monday) near the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) base at the end of Point Road in Durban.

In a video posted to ALS Paramedics’ Facebook page, Jamieson said she was found unconscious on the jetty, near the sea.

“ALS Paramedics and Netcare 911 worked to stabilise the critically injured runner on the scene before the Netcare 911 aeromedical helicopter was called in to rapidly transport the lady to a nearby hospital for the urgent care she required,” said Jamieson.

While theories abound as to what transpired, the authorities are investigating.
