Richards Bay FC win incredible Nedbank Cup knockout thriller

Otieno thwarts Makudubela and Tuli Nashixwa nails his for NRB and it’s 3-3

YOU couldn’t write a script like the one that played out when Richards Bay FC knocked Siwelele FC out of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday night.

The Rich Boyz were down 1-0 at half time, then equalised to make it 1-1 after 90 minutes, with the NRB side increasingly dominating proceedings.

Into the first half of extra time, and the tireless Lundi Mahala deflects Sbani Mtungwa’s goal-bound shot (2-1).

Mahala then bangs in another, from a Sanele Barns cross (3-1) and it looks done and dusted.

But Thabani Zuke cruelly puts the ball into his own net (3-2), and with extra time running out, Simphiwe Mcineka goes off injured and 10-man NRB concede again (3-3).

Five players from each side sign on to take the penalty kicks.

Siwelele takes the first one via Sanoka, which Ian Otieno saves (0-0). Knox Mutizwa flies his into the roof of the net (1-0).

Otieno get his fingertips to the next attempt by Baliti, but it goes in (1-1), while Sbangani Zulu sends his spot kick into orbit (1-1).

Otieno goes the wrong way against Lungu and Barns under-hits his pen, and the home side leads 2-1.

Siwele scores their fourth attempt through Moralo but so does Zuke for NRB (3-2).

Otieno thwarts Makudubela and Tuli Nashixwa nails his for NRB and it’s 3-3.

Time for sudden death, and Luthuli send his shot wide of the post.

All NRB need to do now is score, and the job is given to none other than Otieno, who calmly strokes the ball into the corner for a 4-3 win in a game that will be spoken about for many a year.
