Dance and art project gives hope

The Tugela River Dance and Art Project will be at the Salvation Army church hall once a week.

THE Tugela River Dance and Art Project brought cheer to Tugela’s youth at the weekend when it hosted the ‘Deeply Rooted’ dance company from Chicago.

Seven dancers from Chicago, as well as the project’s dance teachers from Flatfoot Dance Company delivered an exciting session. They were joined by the US Embassy’s Cultural Officer.

‘Deeply Rooted’ are guests of the US Arts Envoy Programme in South Africa and are participating in the Durban-based ‘JOMBA!’ 2013 festival, currently on show at various venues nationally.

The local community-based project is an initiative directed at youth who have very little to no exposure to expressive art.

Once a week at the Salvation Army church hall, a dance and art class is held. The classes are used as a medium to instil and promote discipline, self-esteem and home pride in the lives of the youth between the ages of 6 and 21 years.
