King Cetshwayo vets join forces with army to fight rabies
Since the beginning of this year, there have been two cases of rabies in the district
As part of Armed Forces Day activities, SANDF veterinary services is accompanying district Department of Health animal technicians on rabies outreaches to the region’s rural areas.
KZN has been in the midst of a rabies outbreak and, since 1 April 2022, the King Cetshwayo veterinary services have vaccinated over 30 000 dogs and cats against the dreaded disease.

Since the beginning of this year, there have been two cases of rabies in the district – one dog in uMlalazi and one in uMhlathuze.
There was also a suspected rabid cow in Nkandla but, owing to ongoing protest action, it was not possible to reach the animal and take a sample for testing.
When collaborating with SANDF veterinary services, the department chooses difficult-to-reach areas that carry a high risk of hijacking, that they cannot ordinarily access.
