Family, friends and fans pay tribute to Theuns Jordaan
Steve Hofmeyer called it “a saying goodbye song”, and that Jordaan’s pain and strength touched him deeply, especially towards the end.
A memorial service for Afrikaans singer Theuns Jordaan was held in Moreleta Park, Pretoria east, where various singers, including Steve Hofmeyr, performed in honour of the artist.
The service was broadcast live from Jordaan’s Facebook Page, as well as from the Afrikaans is Groot’s Youtube channel.
Hofmeyer published his song titled “Sing dan in die hemel”, directly thereafter on Youtube.
Jordaan (50) lost his battle to cancer and passed away last Wednesday. He was diagnosed with leukaemia last year.
On his Facebook page, Hofmeyer also encouraged Jordaan’s father, saying: “No parent should bury their child.”
The video included a voice note Jordaan had sent Hofmeyer a few days before his passing, saying it was an uphill battle, and that there was nowhere to run.
Hofmeyer called it “a saying goodbye song” and that Jordaan’s pain and strength touched him deeply, especially towards the end.
Hofmeyer said Jordaan’s words will always haunt him.
Juanita du Plessis supported Jordaan’s father, Willie. His mother, Maryna, was unable to make the trip to Pretoria.
Singers Kurt Darren, Bok van Blerk, Dozi and Bobby van Jaarsveld were also in attendance.
Friends of Jordaan in the industry performed live at the funeral service.
Werner van Dalen, Jordaan’s friend of 22 years, said he was a simple man and a dreamer.
“He never gave up, not even during the last year, which was very difficult. He kept on dreaming and looking forward to the day when he could sing again.”
Fans from all over the country and friends took to social media to share their condolences, posting his songs and celebrating his life.
Various Afrikaans celebrities have also been sharing their versions of Jordaan’s songs on social media.
