#ThisIsUs is a story worth celebrating

A new movement is encouraging people to embrace the spirit and attitude that enables South Africans to triumph over adversity.

South Africans have had a difficult 18 months. Covid-19 has impacted every facet of people’s lives, from school and work, to social interaction and sport. On top of that, the nation went through the anxiety of the July unrest and the uncertainty of the municipal elections.

Many people are feeling insecure, and are questioning where the country is headed, and what the future holds.

Yet, despite these enormous challenges, South Africans are showing their grit and can-do attitude. Numerous everyday actions keep the hope of a bright tomorrow alive, from those community members who helped clean up their towns after the riots, to the vaccination ambassadors and even the school choirs lifting their voices to uplift spirits.

This sense of community, of belonging and of wanting to make a difference is unwavering. Its quiet presence can be felt in every city, town and village. Major news happenings may obscure it, but it remains steadfast, fed by South Africans’ warm and wonderful spirit.

#ThisIsUs is a campaign intended to highlight South Africa as experienced by its people. It encompasses not only the systemic challenges we face, but the successes. It acknowledges the good, confronts the bad and celebrates South Africans who are committed to building a better nation, either through grand gestures or simple acts of caring. It provides a platform for the sharing of stories that show the world what South Africans are made of – essentially, what makes us… us.

All South Africans are invited to join the #ThisIsUs journey, and what better time than now, with Heritage Day being celebrated on September 24 and giving us the opportunity to embrace our diversity.
