Far East Rand Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit will undergo renovations as part of efforts to revitalise public health infrastructure in the province, according to the Gauteng Department of Health.

According to the department, the four-month project began on September 1 and is expected to end by December 2026.

The department stated that during this period, all emergency services will be temporarily relocated within the hospital to ensure continued, uninterrupted care.

Services will be moved to other clinical areas:

The Out-Patients Department (OPD) and the female orthopaedic ward;
Surgical OPD services have moved to the wound clinic;
The urology clinic has moved to the first-floor tea room;
Gynaecology OPD services have moved to the ante-natal ward.

A customised temporary structure is set up outside to cater for general OPD and medical OPD services, including four consultation rooms and a waiting area.

The orthopaedic clinic, dental clinic, and paediatric clinic remain in the Out-Patients Department.

“The hospital works closely with other facilities in the Ekurhuleni District for patient diversion, where necessary, to manage service demand during the renovation period,” explained the health department.

The provincial department called for patience during the renovations and apologised for the inconvenience.

The department stated the renovation project is necessary as part of ongoing work to improve healthcare facilities and provide better patient care.
