Darren “Micasa” Gavine’s life was cut short, when he was gunned down in the early hours of Sunday morning, in Tsakane.
According to his brother, Craig Gavine (28), Darren left the jazz club where they were socialising with friends.
He returned after some time to say he was mugged of his brand new cell phone.
After taking off his jacket, Darren left again to find those who had taken his phone.
He was never seen alive again.
“I received a call at around 5am from my father telling me my brother had been killed.
“We rushed to Tsakane, and when we arrived in Mnisi Street I lifted the pink blanket to confirm that it was my brother,” explains Craig.
Neighbours apparently heard seven shots being fired, but three hit him in the chest.
The hardest part for Craig was when his mother called him with a final request to kiss his dead brother on her behalf.
“I had to do it for my mom,” Craig elaborates.
Darren moved to Tsakane last year, as it was close to the Library where he had been working since 2011.
Craig says it was evident to him that his brother loved staying in Tsakane, when he paid him a visit in Tsakane last year.
“It would have been his 26th birth day on April 6, and its really hard on my parents.
“I’m just trying to be strong and arrange my brother’s funeral to spare my parents from further heartache,” Craig says.
The family has opted to have Darren cremated, and a memorial service will be held at the Tsakane Library, corner Gubhela and Xhosa Street tomorrow at 9am.
Tsakane SAPS failed to comment on the incident.
