According to the Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora, the hijackers lie down next to the road, pretending to be injured.
He says the hijacker stops a car and pretends to be desperate for help and when the driver stops the car and gets out, the hijacker, who is armed with a firearm, jumps inside and drives away, leaving the car owner stranded next to the road.
Ramphora also explains that another trick that the hijackers use is throwing an egg onto a car’s windscreen.
He says when the driver uses the car wipers to clean the windscreen it turns white to such an extent that the driver cannot see clearly.
“When the driver stops the car to clean the mess, the hijackers get a chance to hijack the car,” says Ramphora.
He advises drivers to avoid being victims of such hijackings by not stopping their cars unnecessarily at the side of the road.
