Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says a security guard who was on duty at around 1am at the scrapyard was helped by the neighbours after the five suspects tied his legs and hands together before escaping from the scene.
He says the suspects demanded the car keys and cash from the victim and used the car that they stole to run away.
A case of business robbery was opened.
No arrest has been made and the police are urging the community to assist them in arresting the suspects.
