Community angered by senseless killing

KwaThema - On Sunday morning around 6am, a driver of a white Corsa with an unknown registration hit and killed a 29-year-old man.

The incident occurred at Vlakfontein Road in Extension Three, Barcelona, KwaThema.

It is believed the driver of the vehicle sped off, leaving the scene which led to a protest from the community who brought traffic to a standstill as a result.

“The residents barricaded the street with burning tyres, stones, bricks, damaged road surface and stoned one passing vehicle, causing for the EMPD and SAPS to be called to disperse the crowd.

“The local councillor was then summoned to address the enraged residents who demanded that speed calming measures in the form of humps be constructed on Vlakfontein Road.

“Fortunately, the protesters dispersed peacefully around 1.30pm,” says EMPD spokesman, Wilfred Kgasago.

In the meantime, the police have made a plea to anyone one who has information to come forward so that the culprit can be apprehended.

Nobody was arrested but a case of culpable homicide was registered at KwaThema Police Station.
