Arts group inspires change

KwaThema - Vuyo Ngoma (23) has always been passionate about arts and the youth, so he brought the two together and created Sboniso Arts Group.

“I get concerned when I see young people loitering on the streets and having nothing to do,” he explains.

Ngoma says he started the choir while he was still a learner at Nkumbulo Secondary School.

“It was after I left Nkumbulo five years ago that I renamed it Sboniso, and brought it to the community.”

He mentors young actors, singers and dancers.

“I believe being in the group helps us stay away from drugs and crime.

“We are focusing on perfecting our craft.”

Twenty-year-old Mthokozisi Mafuleka says being part of the group has helped him realise his purpose.

“I’ve always loved singing, but I didn’t know where to start.”

Mafuleka adds that Sboniso is not just an arts group, but they have become a family.

The group performs at weddings and funerals in the community and often does not charge their hosts.

“Although we do need money, we don’t charge.

“We hope people will be kind to us and support our mission,” says Ngoma.

Sboniso Arts Group is inviting other talented young people in KwaThema to join them.
