Kwa-Thema – Kgetho Mokoena (14) is an outstanding netball player who plays wing and goal defender. Her netball journey began at age 10.

Mokoena explained that her positions are challenging, yet she enjoys them.

“What I enjoy most about these positions is challenging the opposition, creating turnovers and it also requires timing and speed.

“My first experience as a netball player was nerve-wracking, because I was still learning the rules and understanding my position.

“My primary school coach was the one who encouraged me to play netball,” she said.

Along her journey, Mokoena faced challenges, saying she constantly battled to maintain confidence when playing stronger opponents.

She said her coach motivated her, and she listened more to her coach and teammates.

“Training regularly also helped me build confidence. My most memorable game was playing against Scorpions, because even though I was defending a taller and more experienced opponent, I managed to get turnovers.

“I work on my speed, interceptions, agility and one-on-one defence. I am motivated by the desire to become a better player and reach higher levels in netball. I am also motivated by my coach and teammates,” she said.

Mokoena says her role model is Shamera Sterling because she admires her determination, discipline, the way she defends and never gives up.

Her dream is to earn a netball scholarship and play for the South African squad at international level levels.

“I definitely see myself playing professionally. I know it requires discipline and consistency like my coach always says, so I am willing to put that effort,” cited Mokoena.

Outside netball, Mokoena likes dancing and spending time with her family. She describes herself as a friendly, determined, bubbly and competitive individual.

“I am competitive, hardworking and always willing to learn. Netball has taught me discipline, teamwork and responsibility.

“Playing back line has especially taught me focus,” she added.

Mokoena motivated other netball players to believe in themselves and never fear making mistakes.

“Keep practising, listen to your coach and do not give up when things get difficult,” she concluded.
