Seventeen arrested in KwaThema

KwaThema - Seventeen men suspected of committing armed robberies were arrested on Friday.

This after the members of the Ekurhuleni Central Tactical Team responded to information which led to the arrest of 17 suspects travelling in a taxi leaving the KwaThema dump-site.

Springs police spokesman, Captain Johannes Ramphora, says the police recovered two firearms and ammunition.

“It is alleged that W/O Barry Kruger, stationed at the Flying Squad, went the extra mile by using his private vehicle when he had no access to a state vehicle.

“He ensured that 17 suspects were arrested.

“Searching the taxi, the police found an AK-47 and 41 9mm rounds.

The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange, has commended the diligent work done by the members.

“Such commitment by police officers will take us a long way in our fight to bring down the levels of crime in the province,” said de Lange.

Ramphora says the suspects appeared at the Springs Magistrate’s Court.

“One of the suspects was charged with armed robbery while the others’ cases were struck off the roll for further investigations,” he says.
