Domestic abuse is addressed

Germiston – In commemoration of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, Cool Dads Foundation invited young families to a Family Fun Fiesta Walk last Sunday.
“The purpose of this fun day is to revive young families and create awareness for the 16 days of activism while also raising funds for the organisations’ Big Brother Mentorship programme,” says Bongani Luvalo, founder of the Cool Dads Foundation.
Luvalo believes investing in shaping young men and guiding them into manhood will alleviate the scourge of gender-based violence.
“We have to show them, by example, how to be good men. We need to give them something to aspire to.”
A total of 562 participants helped Luvalo get closer to his goal of raising R500 000 for the Big Brother Mentorship programme.
It will focus on mentoring young boys through camps, educational outings, career guidance and workshops.
He says the boys will be educated about various social ills – one of them being domestic abuse.
“This is a platform to teach them about the negative impacts of abusive households and how they could become moral men of society to beat this abuse pandemic that has plagued our society for decades,” adds Luvalo.
The day’s events, at Germiston Lake, were concluded with a picnic, complete with a kiddies play area.
The adults stayed entertained at the braai area.
“I am happy with how everything turned out through the day.
“We have not reached the targeted amount, but it is a step in the right direction.”
