Tsakani – Local CPF chairperson Mncedisi Somyo has raised concerns regarding the level of substance abuse among young people in the area.

Concerns arose after reports of illegal substance use at local schools.

He urges parents to observe their children’s behaviour, check school bags, and monitor their social media platforms.

“Some of these children watch harmful content and idolise those actions,” Somyo said.

“Parents and community members need to work together to address substance abuse. Substance abuse can contribute to crime and other social challenges affecting young people.

“Parents need to be actively involved in their children’s lives, remain alert to changes in their behaviour, and seek help when necessary.”

Somyo added that keeping children off the streets and away from illicit substances requires involvement in constructive hobbies.

He encouraged parents to support their children’s participation in sports or other activities to keep them occupied.

He also urged community members to work in collaboration and report drug-related activities to CPF members or law enforcement.

“It is important to also support initiatives aimed at keeping young people away from substance abuse.”
