KwaThema trio works on app to get artists booked

“Getting into the industry depends on your contacts and financial muscle. We are trying to eliminate that with this app.”

KwaThema – Three friends are creating an app to assist up-and-coming artists to get more recognition.

Kabelo Maphanga, the founder of the Zaka App, says: “The purpose of the app is to get artists who are still up-and-coming booked directly, cutting out the middleman and corruption.”

The University of Johannesburg economics student says the idea came from a friend who is studying computer sciences and is developing the app, which the trio hopes to launch in September.

Co-founder Amkela Mapheto says this is a great opportunity for up-and-coming artists.

“Getting into the industry depends on your contacts and financial muscle.

“We are trying to eliminate that with this app,” he explains.

Tumelo Tsebela, the third member of the trio, says: “We hope up-and-coming artists will have it easier because they will now be able to find gigs to perform at.”

The trio says they need support from their community in the form of sharing their music and attending their events.

The app, which is exclusively for up-and-coming artists, will allow users to share links to their songs and videos.

The app will only be open to hip-hop artists when it is launched, but more genres will be added as it grows.
