Phase three of Joe Nzamane Road underway

“We urge disgruntled residents to refrain from stopping the project. If anyone has grievances they must raise them with me or the municipality."

KwaThema – Groundwork for the three-kilometre extension of phase three Joe Nzamane Road is underway.

Phase one of the street construction started in 2017 from Kgaswane Street and the second phase, which stretched from Marule Street, was completed in June last year.

The plan for the R10-million worth construction is to connect with the roads in Extension Seven, which will lead to Vlakfontein Road.

This will also be a route for the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) once it is rolled out in the area.

Ward 80 Clr Wilson Busakwe says at the moment the contractor is busy with the groundwork of the project and the actual work will start within two weeks.

“The project was delayed because we were waiting for the 2018/19 budget to come out after we exhausted funds from the previous budget.

“We also had to wait for a contractor to be appointed by the municipality.”

Busakwe adds the construction of the road is to reduce the amount of traffic on Kgaswane Street, especially on weekends for funerals held at Vlakfontein Cemetery.

“We identified that the traffic is unbearable and had to come up with ways to diverge the traffic.

“We also hope it will reduce the amount of crime carried out in the open space where the road is constructed,” explains Busakwe.

The ward councillor says the project has absorbed five people from Barcelona and eight more will come from the four voting districts in the area.

“The project has absorbed eight people from the community.

“We urge disgruntled residents to refrain from stopping the project. If anyone has grievances they must raise them with me or the municipality.

“This is part of the development in our area which we will all benefit from,” he says.
