Local athletics club shines at nationals: 20 medals for KwaThema athletes
The club returned with 20 medals in total - 17 gold, two silver and one bronze. The group managed to break two world records, one African record and nine South African records.
KwaThema – The KwaThema Disabled Sports Club represented Gauteng at the Toyota National Championships for the Physically Disabled and Visually Impaired, which were held as a qualifier for the World Para Athletics Championships, in Stellenbosch from March 17 to 21.
This was in preparation for the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai from November 7 to 15 and the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.
The club returned with 20 medals in total – 17 gold, two silver and one bronze. The group managed to break two world records, one African record and nine South African records.

Their coach, Ntombi Zwane, says: “We are so happy with the results.
“I would definitely say this year was much better than last year.
“We managed to break records, which was a total booster for the team, and we look forward to achieving more.”
Nthabiseng Phala, who managed to break the South Africa record in shot put, expressed her gratitude towards her coaches and teammates.
“Training is important and the coaches ensure we attend training.
“They provide us with helpful tips and advice, if it wasn’t for them we would not have made this far,” says Phala.
Neo Ndlovu says: “Even though I managed to break the South African record for the 100m, I am not entirely happy with my performance because I feel I did not push myself enough, but I am grateful.”
