KwaThema Bulls hope to involve women in basketball

“We want young boys and girls to to join the team because we want to grow the mentality of equal opportunities and responsibilities,” Kunene says.

KwaThema – The KwaThema Bulls hosted the Wattville Watts and Duduza Magic teams for a basketball tournament last weekend in Bulithando.

Bulls captain Thandokuhle Kunene says the game against the Watts was challenging.

“The Watts have been playing together longer than we have and have more chemistry as a team.

“Hosting teams like them is exactly why we need to improve our game,” says Kunene.

Duduza Magic, a fairly new team, was invited to help grow basketball in Kwatsaduza.

“We hosted them because we want to encourage them to keep pushing as playing against them helps them improve their skills,” he explains.

The Bulls host tournaments to grow basketball by showing people that basketball goes beyond bouncing the ball and shooting for a hoop.

They hope to host another tournament during the June holiday so they can reach out to players of schoolgoing age through their u-18 development programme.

“Learners hoping to join the team need to maintain a certain average before they can join because we are trying to maintain a student/athlete mentality that will enable our players to enter higher education,” says Kunene.

The goal of the programme is to also introduce girls from Kwatsaduza to basketball as the team currently only have men.

Seniors are welcome to join the team, but need to maintain a fitness regimen outside the team. Bulls train on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.

The scores were:

KwaThema Bulls 35 – 48 Wattville Watts

Duduza Magic 25 – 37 Wattville Watts

Duduza Magic 31 – 38 KwaThema Bulls.
