“We are the only team with all-female members,” says Malatji.
The game was in preparation for the upcoming season, with the league set to begin next weekend.
The team captain, Nqobile Mathebula (13), says: “We have been playing with boys for a while now. We went into this game very confident and it was unfortunate that we lost, but we will bounce back with our next game.”
Mathebula explains that they are facing challenges and constantly have to deal with being underestimated because some people are still under the impression that soccer is a men’s sport and not meant for women.
Another challenge is the lack of sponsorship to cover their travel costs for all girls’ tournaments, which are mostly played outside Kwatsaduza.

Overjoyed Sanders United coach Zolile Maseko says: “This game for us was more practice than anything else because the girls still need to improve.
“However, we had to focus on the sport, not on the gender, as gender doesn’t matter and I always tell my boys to never underestimate them.”
