KwaThema residents urged not to give their title deeds to loan sharks as security

“You should also get letters of authority so that in the event of your death, there are no disputes in your family,” says Mpya.

KwaThema – The City of Ekurhuleni’s Siyaqhuba bus rolled into KwaThema on May 17 to hand out title deeds to residents.

MMC for Human Settlements Lesiba Mpya, who stood in for Mayor Mzwandile Masina, asked beneficiaries to keep their title deeds in a safe place.

“Do not give the title deeds to loan sharks, but keep them in a safe place.

“You should also get letters of authority so that in the event of your death, there are no disputes in your family,” says Mpya.

Speaking about the importance of the title deeds, Mpya says: “When people get their title deeds, they get a sense of security of tenure and a sense of ownership.”

The title deeds were handed to the recipients for the houses they rented from the apartheid government.

According to Mpya, it took a long time because they first had to locate the owners, some of whom had moved out of the houses.

He says the government will avoid the problem in future.

“We have taken a decision that wherever we have a new development, for instance Tsakane Extension 22, we immediately start the process of title deeds so that we don’t have a prolonged process of giving people title deeds,” he says.

One of the recipients, Elizabeth Zulu, says she is very happy to officially own her property.

“I am very happy. I can even die in peace knowing that no one can fight my children for my house when I am gone,” she says.
