Sunday schools raise awareness against child trafficking and abuse

“Even though we have taught the children to respect their elders, it is not safe anymore to expect children to be speaking to strangers in the name of respect as that might put them in harm's way.”

KwaThema – The KwaThema branch of the United Reformed Church in South Africa invited multiple Sunday schools from various branches for a march on June 1 to raise awareness on child trafficking and abuse.

“We had Sunday schools from our Daveyton, Kwatsaduza, Soweto, Kagiso, Potchefstroom, Venda, Mbalenhle, Delmas, Heidelberg and Standerton branches to march with us to raise awareness and learn how to stay safe with all that is happening around us,” says head Sunday school teacher and organiser Thuli Msibi.

According to Msibi, the meeting of the different branches will not only help the children learn how to behave in the church, but also socialise with each other and learn valuable life lessons together.

“The march was very effective because we are grooming the children to be good adults,” she adds.

Some of the lessons the children were taught included not speaking to strangers.

“Even though we have taught the children to respect their elders, it is not safe anymore to expect children to be speaking to strangers in the name of respect as that might put them in harm’s way,” she concludes.
