Young Masters win Mbosh Tournament

“We are trying to keep them in school and active in sports so as to keep them from participating in these activities.”

KwaThema – The third annual Community Challenge Mbosh Games for u-17 players reached the finals on Sunday at KwaThema Stadium, seeing Young Masters FC crowned as champions.

Young Masters FC locked horns in a tough game in the finals against Valencia FC, winning 4-2 with penalties.

Junior Spinners FC ended in third place after winning 3-1 against Sunders United FC.

The games started in March with 16 u-17 teams affiliated to the Springs Local Football Association (SLFA) fighting to be crowned as winners of the tournament.

SLFA technical advisor Mkhonza Mkhonzana says the tournament started three years ago with the aim of shaping the soccer careers of young people and sponsoring their education.

“The winning team walked away with soccer gear, gold medals and a trophy, while the second team was awarded silver medals and soccer gear.

“The goalkeeper, mid-fielder, defender and striker of the tournament walked away with vouchers, school stationery or other educational needs worth R1 000,” he says.

Mkhonzana says they appreciate the continuous support by the Moabelo family who have been sponsoring the tournament since its inception.

The chairperson of the SLFA, Joseph Makuwa, says the tournament is aimed at fighting social ills, such as substance abuse and crime, and grooming players to compete in national challenges.

“These players are at a fragile age where they are easily swayed and influenced to participate in activities like crime and drugs use.

“We are trying to keep them in school and active in sports so as to keep them from participating in these activities,” he says.
