Young women call out abuse
“We need the police to help us fight this behaviour and to remove them from the community, we are tired of living in fear,” she adds.
Tsakane – Young women in Tsakane joined hands to raise awareness of the abuse they face in their communities on a daily basis.
They took photographs dressed in blue and white, holding placards calling off the behaviour of the abusers at the Extension Five Park in Tsakane on Saturday.
This was part of the annual national Women’s Month celebration.
Campaign organiser Bongiwe Simelane says as women living in that community they are aware of women abuse in the area.
“We are tired of abuse; it is happening around us, to people close to us and to us, and continuing to happen even in 2019.
“We face a lot of abuses, but we are still scared to speak out and sometimes we feel powerless to speak about them.
“We are tired of men who feel they have power over us, and we are saying enough is enough,” she explains.
She says she is hoping their awareness campaign will reach the relevant bodies, especially the legal sector to help them fight the scourge.
“A lot of victims open cases but often times the cases are either thrown out of court, or the perpetrator is not arrested and continue to walk the streets violating others.
“We need the police to help us fight this behaviour, and to remove them from the community. We are tired of living in fear,” she adds.
Mbali Nkosi, who is part of the campaign, encouraged women to continue reporting cases of abuse to the police and other legal bodies.
“The days of being scared to speak out because you are scared of being judged by society are over; the only way for us to win this fight is by speaking out and seeking help.
“The days of women being embarrassed about being embarrassed are over; there are different organisations set up to help empower abused women nationally and in our communities,” she adds.
