Tlakula tennis court restored and fully-functional

February the courts had not been handed over to the community amid allegations of poor construction work.

Kwathema – Although the new Tlakula tennis court was vandalised a few months after the construction work was completed, it has been repaired and is open for public use.

In June last year, Clr Zanele Nyakele officially announced that the three courts on the corner of Moshoeshoe and Shabangu streets were ready for use.

However, in February the courts had not been handed over to the community amid allegations of poor construction work.

Cllr Zanele Nyakale says the dilapidated grand stands will be restored in the second phase of the construction. In the photo is Sharon Mdaka

Now it seems that all that was wrong has been corrected.

“The first phase is finally complete.

“We needed to make sure that the courts are in optimum condition before opening them to the public,” she explains.

The councillor claims that a tournament was hosted three weeks ago at the new courts.

“We had professional tennis players taking part.

“And they told me that the courts were perfect.”

She says the only reason they remain locked is to protect them from more vandalism.

The fence around the courts, which had been vandalised, had since been restored.

In February, Sharon Mdaka pointed at the vandalised fence of the newly-built Tlakula tennis courts.

“Anyone or teams that would like to make use of the courts can book at the KwaThema CCC,” she adds.

Nyakale says phase two of the construction will include the restoration of the grand stands, building of new toilets and changing rooms.
