KwaThema police concerned about increase of women being abused

“We have identified that some of the victims were abused at home and later externally by those who use money to lure them."

KwaThema – Female police officers at KwaThema Police Station and some community members celebrated Women’s Month with the opening of the victim empowerment centre on Friday at the station.

The event was aimed at educating women about their rights and some of the services the police station offers.

KwaThema police station commander Col Mareketle Thobejane says they are concerned about the growing number of women who are still being abused.

“We are worried about this because many of these victims report cases and within a few weeks they withdraw them.

“Some of the victims allege they resolved the matter between families, only to return a few months later to open another case.

“Unfortunately, we cannot stop them from withdrawing the cases, but to advise them accordingly.

“As the police, we cannot turn them away or judge them the next time they want to open a criminal case of abuse.

“We have identified that this is a national challenge because on a daily basis we read and hear in the media about a women who was abused and killed by their spouse.

“All we can do is educate them about abuse and channels to follow to seek justice,” she explains.

“We have identified that some of the victims were abused at home and later externally by those who use money to lure them.

“The assigned officers will know how to deal with the matter in a professional manner until the victim is helped.

“We are calling on women to speak out against abuse, there is nothing to be ashamed about,” she says.
