‘Help us feed the poor’

KwaThema – Mama Sarah Masuku has taken it upon herself to feed drug users living on the streets and children from poor backgrounds in KwaThema.
The founder of Tjolweni Drop-in Centre says they feed the children from Extension Three, Six, Seven and Eight twice a week.
“In 2016, I decided to expand my day-care centre to a feeding scheme because I believed I would be able to reach and help more people.
“It broke my heart seeing a lot of young people going to bed with an empty stomach.
“I was also concerned about the substance users living on the streets and not having a single meal a day.”

Mam Sarah says even though they are addicted to drugs, they are still our children and should be treated as such.
“I am urging residents to stop calling them names.
“They are still our children and part of the community.
“The least we can all do is help them clean up their act,” she explains.
She says she wishes she could hand out food parcels daily, but because of the limited funds is unable to do so.
“We receive the food parcels from two retailers twice a week and try to cover as many children as possible with that.
“I also use my pension grant to make sure that some of the children’s needs are met.

“We are calling on anyone, even business people, to come forward to help us.
“We currently need a bakkie that we will use to collect the food from the stores,” she says.
