Unemployed youth empower each other
“We are also impressed to see young people being able to find employment through this programme,” he explains.
Tsakane – Unemployed residents have taken it upon themselves to help each other with skills to improve their employment opportunities.
The group of over 400 young people meets every Monday morning to share ideas on how to improve their lives.
Ward 82 Clr Desmond Buitendacht says the programme started as the Unemployment Forum, but they later changed the name to Skills Development Forum.

“We were concerned about the number of people who were unemployed in the area and thought if we all came together we would be able to help each other towards a better tomorrow.
“We discuss only 20 per cent of the service delivery challenges faced by the residents in the ward, but mostly we prioritise ways of finding help for our people.
“We have invited SETA accredited organisations to provide the attendees with skills in drafting their CVs, computer training, and opening and registering their businesses.
“We are happy to see the number of people registering in the project and those registering the small business growing weekly.
“We are also impressed to see young people being able to find employment through this programme,” he explains.

Beneficiary of the programme Brendolene Batman says through this initiative they were able to register their drug awareness NGO.
“It will help place substance users who are ready to clean up their act and rebuild their lives in a rehabilitation centre.
“Upon their release, they will attend aftercare workshops and skills programmes which will prepare them for finding their feet.
“We are pleading with residents with skills to come forward to help us with whatever they have to make this initiative a success,” she says.
