Local cop shines at African SAPS soccer games
“I started playing for the SAPS in 2016; we competed, but finished second in the East Rand tournament."
Duduza – Det Const Moeketsi Monaheng was part of the team that represented the country at the Southern African Police Organisations Cup (SAPOC) in Angola.
Monaheng joined the force in 2014 and after training he was stationed at Duduza Police Station, where he also found a space to express his love for sports.
He says from a young age he has always loved playing soccer, but after completing his matric he decided to follow his passion to protect the country.

“I had to choose between the two and the safety of my country came first.
“I was happy when I found out that there are opportunities within SAPS to pursue my love for soccer.
“I started playing for the SAPS in 2016; we competed, but finished second in the East Rand tournament.
“In 2017 and 2018, we won and I was selected for the Ekurhuleni squad team and went on to compete in the provincial tournament.
“I was selected to be part of the national team which went on to represent the country in Angola,” he says.
The constable says his hard work paid off when he was selected to represent South Africa at SAPOC in Angola against other countries in the Southern African Development Community region.

“I was awarded the player of the tournament award and also finished top goalscorer, with seven goals,” he
adds.
Monaheng says he was motivated by Duduza policce station sommander Lt Col Bheki Mhlungu, who is a former football player.
“He advised me not to hold back my ambitions because the SAPS has created a favourable environment for members to reach their full potential,” he adds.
