Ncobile wants to compete nationally

“ I was hoping this year the competition would have enough funds for us to move to the nationals but we were told maybe next year,” she explains.

Tsakane – Tsakane Secondary School Grade Eight learner, Ncobile Mathebula would like to compete in the national Maths Olympiad.

The 13-year-old was crowned second runner-up at the Maths Olympiad Provincial Competition on Saturday at Hoerskool Silverton.

She has been competing since Grade Three, finishing either in first or second position but the competition has never moved beyond the provincial leg.

“It would be nice to compete with new faces because through the years I have grown to know some of the participants.

“ I was hoping this year the competition would have enough funds for us to move to the nationals but we were told maybe next year,” she explains.

Ncobile says she worked hard through the months preparing for the competition.

“I worked with my school teachers and my father, Sipho, helped me with other difficult sums.

“He showed me ways of solving difficult sums without using a calculator.

“I would like to see myself excelling in maths and studying further in the field to help other learners who are struggling with sums,” she adds.
