Home Affairs calls against fraudulent marriages
“Home Affairs officials are not responsible for those illegal marriages, but the residents are.”
Tsakane – Home Affairs official Mashiya Vuma urged the residents of Tsakane to refrain from exchanging their IDs for money with loan sharks.
She was speaking during a community imbizo (meeting) held at Faranani Community Hall on Saturday.
Vuma says as the local office, they receive claims of lost IDs daily, which are not lost but in the possession of loan sharks.

“We have discovered that many exchange their IDs for money and go on to apply for a new ID monthly.
“This is against the law because for one to apply for a new ID they need an affidavit from the police and providing the police with wrong information is a criminal act, known as perjury, and you can be arrested for it,” she explains.
Vuma added that they have also identified that women in the area get married legally with foreign nationals in exchange for money.
“As it is, we are sitting with over 100 cases of women claiming to have been married to foreign nationals without their knowledge and this is not true.
“Home Affairs officials are not responsible for those illegal marriages, but the residents are.
“The only time they come forward to claim the unlawful marriages is when their partners vanish and do not hold on to their end of the bargain of making the monthly payments.

“As soon as the marriage is registered, the foreign national vanishes and no money is paid into your account.
“These women come to our offices claiming that the system has unlawfully registered them married, while they know very well that they agreed to the union.
“It is unfortunate that the system recognises that you accounted to be married to the man,” she says.
Vuma says she is urging residents to refrain from these illegal practices.
