Celebrating women in sports

Kwatsaduza- The 2020/2021 Ekurhuleni Women in Sports Awards nomination are now open. The launch was held virtually on July 23.

The awards are aimed at commemorating women in the sporting fraternity within the province of Gauteng and also includes the City of Johannesburg, Westrand District, City of Tshwane and the Sedibeng District.

Nominations are open from July 23 to August 22, and forms are available on the Futballing Girls social media pages as well as on their WhatsApp number 065 690 5407.

Founder and chairperson of Futballing Girls, Moonira Ramathula said it remains crucial to encourage the culture of celebrating women in sport and bringing achievements to the fore, inspires and motivates other young girls and women to work towards their own goals.

“There has been tremendous growth in participation, women understanding the power of recognition and the role women play in the development of girls sports participation on the ground.

“Our goal is to create positive change towards gender equality in sports through our programmes. It’s also the feedback from women, young and older about our platform giving them a voice and inspiring them to want to achieve more and motivate the next generation,” she explained.

Ramathula added that the pandemic might have disadvantaged many sportswomen, as they anticipate a drop in the number of nominations.

“I think we will definitely see a drop in the number of nominations, however, that does not mean we should stop.

“The empowerment of women should never be paused based on a pandemic; in fact, we should use the pandemic as an opportunity to intensify our efforts in working towards achieving gender equality in sport,” she said.

During the course of the pandemic, they partnered with Betway for leadership skills training for a previous finalist in the Administrator of the Year category.

They also ran a personal branding workshop and launched their own talk show called Spotlight on Women in Sport which gives a platform to women in the sporting industry to share their journey.

• Federation of the Year

The District Women in Sports Awards dates are as follows:

Westrand: September 10, Ekurhuleni: September 24, Johannesburg: October 8, Tshwane: October 22 and Sedibeng: November 5.
