Motorists urged to obey rules of the road

The EMPD is urging motorists to adhere to the specified speed limits when driving.
EMPD media liaison officer Lerato Monyane said in celebration of Transportation Month, which is commemorated in October, the department will be releasing weekly tips and advice to motorists.
“We would like to urge motorists to maintain a legal speed limit at all times and keep a safe following distance. Drivers must be able to see the rear wheels of the vehicle in front of them.
“Drivers must not use their cellphones or apply make-up while driving.
“Always fasten your seatbelt and keep the children at the backseats of the vehicle with their safety belts on,” she said.

October was declared Transport Month in 2005 during the Transport Lekgotla.
It is used to raise awareness of the important role of transport in the economy and to encourage participation from civil society and business, including the provision of a safe and more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system in the country.
She added that drivers should not drive under the influence of alcohol.
“Also, ensure your valuables are kept safe in the boot of your car and refrain from stopping for hitchhikers and beggars.”
During this month, the Department of Transport and its entities showcases transport infrastructure services in aviation, maritime, public transport and roads.
This month will also be used to further advance the country’s road safety initiatives, while also creating awareness of the economic benefits of the sector.
