Residents join hands to fight crime

Kwa-Thema – Residents in Kwa-Thema have joined hands to help fight crime.
Over six weeks ago, a group of concerned residents decided to come together to help come up with ways to restore peace in the area.
Group media liaison officer Bongani Luvalo said after a spate of hijackings and house break-ins in the area, they called a community meeting.

They decided to march to the Kwa-Thema Police Station to hand over a memorandum of grievances to the police.
Unfortunately, two days after the march two cars were hijacked in the area. They then identified the need for residents to patrol the streets.
“In neighbouring areas like Springs, there are community patroller groups. The Kwa-Thema Crime Unit is always on the ground and often is the first one on the scene of the crime.
“They can fight and keep criminal activities to a minimal because criminals know that there is someone always watching,” he added.

Since the formation, the two hijacked cars in the area were recovered.
Luvalo added that they are not trying to replace the police but work hand in glove with them.
They are also calling on more residents to join them to be able to cover the whole community.
