Kwa-Thema – November 9 is marked as National Adoption Day.
As a beneficiary of this initiative, I am encouraging residents to observe the day by wearing a purple ribbon or drawing a smiley on their palms.
I feel over the years, especially in the black community, the subject is overlooked due to a lack of knowledge.
There are a lot of negative connotations attached to this and many shy away from opening up their homes to children in need of shelter and love.

As people, we need to refrain from making unkind remarks about this exercise as it is not only beneficial to the adopted child but also to the parents who are adopting.
It gives them a chance to be parents and share their love.
I believe we need to educate each other about the subject and do better in helping to change lives.
When I was adopted at a very young age, hope was restored. I knew I was safe and loved by my adopted family.
I wish more people would open up their homes, especially for small children.
