Busakwe receives alderman title

Kwa-Thema – Former Ward 80 Clr Wilson Busakwe was one of the 17 councillors who received the honour of alderman from the City of Ekurhuleni during the final council meeting of the term recently.
This is an honour of the highest order for councillors, which is bestowed by the council through its Conferment of Civic Honours Policy.
This policy outlines a stringent qualifying criterion that includes an unbroken record of serving as an Ekurhuleni councillor, determined by an accumulative point system.

In a statement released by the metro, is it stipulated that a councillor obtains a minimum of 20 points on the following scale:
• One point for each completed year served as a directly elected councillor in any municipality
• An additional two points for each 10 consecutive years served as a councillor
• Two additional points for each completed year’s service as a MMC subsequent to December 5, 2000, or as chairperson of a Section 79 Committee or a MEC of any municipality after February 2, 1995, or a party whip

• Two additional points for each completed year served as leader of the official opposition or a chief whip of the official opposition or a chairperson of an executive committee after February 1, 1995
• Three points for each completed year served at any municipality as speaker of council, chief whip of council, executive mayor or chairperson of chairpersons
• Three points for each completed year served in the City of Ekurhuleni as speaker of council, chief whip of council, executive mayor or chairperson of chairpersons.

This changed their title from councillor to alderman.
Busakwe was elected a ward councillor in 2011 after serving as a ward committee member in Ward 77.
This was after years of fighting for Barcelona, Flora Park, D Section and other informal settlements in the ward to receive proper services that include housing and electricity.
“The ward councillor at the time had told the residents in Barcelona they were not going to receive services because the area was not on the map, and that there were plans to move residents to an identified land.
“When we went to the Department of Housing, we discovered there were houses that were approved. Residents then started mobilising that I lead the fight on their behalf for services as a ward committee member until they nominated me to stand for the 2011 local government elections,” he explained.
In 2016, Busakwe was elected for a second term to serve his community as a ward councillor.

One of the achievements on top of his list is the demolishing of the five-shaft building where criminals converged and terrorised the community and the construction of Joe Mzamane Road and Matlala Park.
He added he has served his community with diligence and am grateful for the opportunity.
“I was elected to serve and I did just that. I am proud to say I have delivered on all my promises.
“I wish my predecessor the best of luck and urged the community to work with her as they did with me,” he added.
