Kaizer Chiefs legend: Mamelodi Sundowns will win the league
“Chiefs are still coming around, but they got hit by a Covid-19 outbreak. Sundowns are far too strong at the moment, and they are getting the job done, unlike other teams that are faltering."
Shane McGregor, a Kaizer Chiefs veteran, believes the five substitution limit to deal with the Covid-19 outbreak favors clubs with bigger squads.
McGregor, who is now 58, believes the five-substitution rule benefits teams with depth, such as Mamelodi Sundowns, who are now leading the DStv Premiership log.
Mamelodi Sundowns are currently 17 points clear at the top of the DStv Premiership log, ahead of second-placed Stellenbosch, and 18 points ahead of Kaizer Chiefs, who have three games at hand. They are firm favourites with Betway online soccer betting to go for their record-extending 6th domestic title.
“Yes, Sundowns will win the league. It’s as simple as that as they are far too good for everyone,” said McGregor. “ It’s not normal, and the problem is that Sundowns have been far too consistent with other teams faltering, and that’s the biggest problem. It’s not good for soccer and it’s not good for the game.
“Chiefs are still coming around, but they got hit by a Covid-19 outbreak. Sundowns are far too strong at the moment, and they are getting the job done, unlike other teams that are faltering. Luckily for them, Covid has got a lot to do with it, and a lot of teams have had problems with Covid, while with their big squad they seem to be lucky enough to get away with it. I can’t see Sundowns not winning the league, and they’ll win it easily,” he added.
McGregor featured in over 100 matches for both Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United in all competitions.
In the 1988 season, he was named Footballer of the Year and Players’ Player of the Season by the National Soccer League (NSL) after scoring 19 goals.
McGregor scored 25 goals in 38 games for Kaizer Chiefs as they won the ‘treble’ in 1990/91.
Masandawana is chasing a sixth league title, which they look to be on the verge of achieving, and all the remaining matches can be wagered on the Betway platform.
Sundowns will begin combining domestic commitments and the more difficult Caf Champions League campaign in February 2022.
However, former Orlando Pirates coach Gordon Igesund Igesund does not believe this will have an impact on the Brazilians, who he believes will win the PSL title before March.
“They’ve won the last four league titles and it shows they know what they’re doing,’’ said Igesund.
“Sometimes when they see it’s difficult to win, they happily play for a draw and come back to win the next match.
“They know each and every point counts, so I think the experience of having won the titles before is working so well for them.
“Sundowns have a big squad and quality players, so the Champions League won’t mess up their title charge. Again, chances are that by February they would have already wrapped the league up.”
According to Igesund, Kaizer Chiefs would have to win at least five consecutive Premier Soccer League games while Mamelodi Sundowns would have to lose four times to have a realistic chance of winning the league title. Check out all the betting markets for all Dstv Premier League matches on Betway.
Both Sundowns and Chiefs will break in January 2022 during the Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted in Cameroon.
