Building houses for the poor
Ward 86 Clr Nsizwa Mekgwe is the change he wants to see in his community.
Duduza – As part of his 35th birthday celebrations, Ward 86 Clr Nsizwa Mekgwe has committed to improving the lives of residents in his community.
He built flushing toilets for 160 households and five houses and donated food parcels to 334 families recently.
During an audit Mekgwe conducted in Duduza and parts of Tsakani, which include Ext 17, 20 and 21 in November to identify the residents’ needs, he found that 50 out of 334 households were child-headed or disabled and living in impoverished conditions.
Mekgwe committed to pay for their electricity and water for six months while they find a lasting solution towards independence.
Speaking during the ground turning of the houses a week ago in Duduza, Mekgwe said he was heartbroken to see the conditions that some of the residents were living in, especially in the Gauteng province.

“I didn’t expect to see Gauteng residents still using pit toilets in 2021. I struggled with this reality.
“I committed myself, even fasted and prayed for guidance, to help improve their living conditions,” he explained.
The councillor added that he started approaching businesses to partner with him.
They agreed to build five houses and toilets to improve their living conditions. Volunteers also committed their labour to the construction.
Mekgwe added the estimated time to complete the construction of the houses is the end of October and the toilets at the end of November.
“We need all the help we can get from residents through donations of building material and brick making.
“We are also calling on residents who are qualified artisans who want to offer assistance in building and connecting electricity to come forward,” he added.
