Phiwayinkosi wins WorldSkills competition

Kwa-Thema – KwaZulu-Natal’s Phiwayinkosi Ntshangase was crowned the winner of the WorldSkills South Africa National Competition in the electrical installation category hosted by Ekurhuleni East College’s Artisan and Skills Development Centre in Springs on Friday
In second place was the Free State’s Thabo Mogosi while Western Cape’s Ephrahim Zuhayr finished third.
The competition is divided into two modules, which include the electrical installation and fault finding where they are given pre-build panels and they have to find the faulty aspects.
The 10 young electrical students from TVET colleges across the country were selected after competing in the regional and provincial leg of the competition until they made it to the nationals.
The national winner qualifies to compete in the international leg of the competition, which will be hosted in Austria from November 17 to 19.

Ntshangase, from TVET Mtshashana in KwaZulu-Natal, said his strategy since the beginning of the competition was neatness, speed and minimising mistakes.
“I am going to use the same strategy in Austria and hope it will pay off. This opportunity will prove that my destiny is in this field,” he added.
Centre manager Gugu Mathews said the competition offers the students the opportunity to showcase their skills and talent.
“We hosted the competition in electrical installation skills, which is one of the five remaining skills that were not part of the national competition that was hosted in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We are proud to have hosted a successful event and wish the winner to bring home gold from the international phase of the competition,” she added.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the CEO of CHIETA, Yershen Pillay said the future is in innovation and electrical skills are one of the international sought skills.
He encouraged the youth to use all the opportunities at their disposal to improve themselves.
