Kwa-Thema – Disagreements at a community meeting about grievances surrounding the Rietfontein dumpsite led to some community members leaving while the meeting was still in session.
After a recent march to the dumpsite to hand over a memorandum, Ward 77 community members held a feedback meeting on Thursday.

Fourteen community committee members visited the dumpsite and brought feedback to the community before the Friday deadline the community had given dumpsite management to respond to their grievances.

Regarding the feedback, ward coucillor Thulani Dunjane mentioned that management at the dumpsite claimed to be new and to have not had a handover from the old management. Therefore, the community was asked for 30 days for changes to be implemented.
Parts of the commitments by management to the committee were:
• To extend shifts by an hour
• To cover the rubbish
• To add an extra truck to help with the disposing of the rubbish
• To add chemicals which will rid the smell
Some community members felt the dumpsite should be closed immediately, while others felt the dumpsite management must be given a month as it has been requested to control the odour.
There were engagements and debates that took time without reaching a consensus. That led to members leaving and the meeting being adjourned with no solution.
